Hospitals generally recommend that dogs be neutered before their first estrus. Small dogs are about 6-8 months old. Large dogs grow relatively slowly. The recommended age is about 1 year old. Surgery during the period of estrus for bitches should be avoided because the fragility of the uterus increases and the blood vessels increase and become thicker during estrus. Performing sterilization surgery at this time will increase the risk of surgical bleeding.
