Artificial respiration (AR) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) are emergency actions to restore blood flow and oxygen to vital organs. The first thing we need to understand is that when our owners have these symptoms, we should contact the pet hospital as soon as possible and send them to the hospital. !Because when it comes to emergencies, veterinarians can handle health crises better than we can.

· Difficulty breathing

· Weakness or drowsiness

· Loss of consciousness

·Sudden illness

· Serious injury or trauma

Confirm whether CPR is needed

First, we can check the vital characteristics of cats and dogs to help them determine whether they need artificial respiration and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Perform a respiratory check

Touch the chest to feel the rise and fall of their heart, or place your hand in front of your cat's nose to make sure it's breathing. You can also hold a clean mirror in front of your nose to see if fog forms.

Heartbeat check

Place your ear (or stethoscope) on the left side of your chest near your elbow and listen for a heartbeat. Their heartbeats range from 180 to 200 beats/minute.

Can you feel your pulse

Check for pulse. The femoral artery is located on the inside of the thigh, near where the leg meets the body.

Discoloration of lips and gums

The normal color of lips and gums should be pink. When there is a lack of oxygen, they will appear blue or gray. When blood circulation is poor, they will appear white.

Perform CPR

When breathing stops, the pulse stops, and the gums turn blue/grey, we need to perform emergency CPR. CPR for pets and humans mainly consists of three parts, airway examination, artificial respiration and cardiac compressions.

Airway Management

① First let them lie on their side, gently lift their neck, and tilt their head slightly upward;

② Carefully open their mouths, check whether there is blood, vomit or foreign matter in the mouth, and clean them if possible; (It should be noted that the small bones at the back of the cat's throat cannot be moved. part of cat throat)

③ Pull the tongue forward to straighten the front, and then gently close their mouth;

Artificial respiration

① Straighten your neck and inhale briefly into your nose, once every 4-5 seconds; (if you have received infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation training, you can use a similar breathing intensity)

② Pay attention to their chest movement. When you inhale, the chest should rise at the same time. Relax after exhaling. After giving about 3-5 breaths, check your pulse and breathe again.

③ If there is still no breathing, continue to repeat at a breathing rate of 10 times per minute.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

① Check heartbeat and pulse;

② If there are no signs, place them right side down on the flat ground;

③ Cover both sides of its chest (behind the elbows) with your thumbs and other fingers, and then press quickly to compress the chest to about half of its normal thickness;

④ Compress the chest about 15 times every 10 seconds, and perform artificial respiration every 10 compressions.

CPR steps performed by pet hospitals

① Place an endotracheal tube for artificial respiration;

② Indwelling intravenous catheter to facilitate emergency medication and infusion;

③ Take epinephrine and other emergency drugs to stimulate the heart and breathing.

In general, after checking the pet's breathing and pulse, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation if necessary.
