Tail fractures in dogs usually cannot heal on their own. If it is a minor fracture, the wound may heal on its own if it is flat, but malunion may occur. It is recommended that the owner take the dog to the hospital for examination. After the tail is broken, it may cause local pain, swelling or some abnormal bends. If not treated immediately, it may lead to continued bleeding, secondary infection, suppuration and inflammation and other more serious conditions.

What to do if your dog has a broken bone:

1. Stop the bleeding. Hold the dog and wrap it in gauze. If bones are exposed or bleeding occurs, use gauze (towels, etc. if gauze is not available) to compress the wound to stop bleeding. Apply iodine to the affected area, and remove iodoform-sulfonamide powder from the wound.

2. Reconciliation. The patient was placed in a horizontal position and underwent local anesthesia. When the fractured part of a limb is displaced, traction can be performed distally along the axis of the limb, so that the displaced fractured part can be straightened and the two broken ends can be restored correctly. At this time, attention should be paid to whether the limb axis is normal and whether the two limbs are equal in length.

3. Fixed. Perform general cleaning of the fracture site for non-open fractures. For open fractures, after general treatment, iodoform-sulfonamide powder is sprinkled on the wound, and then a plaster bandage or a small splint is installed to fix it. When fixing, it should be filled with cotton or cotton pads to prevent friction. After immobilization, exercise should be reduced as much as possible. Appropriate exercise can be allowed after 3 to 4 weeks. Generally, bandages and splints can be removed after 40 to 60 days.
