The reasons why cats’ claws stretch and retract:

1. Cats are very curious. When they find novel things, they will attract their attention, and they will use their own claws to attract their attention. The claws are extended and retracted to try to touch objects.

2. Cats will stretch and retract their claws when playing or fighting, and then wait for opportunities to move.

3. When a cat’s claws are pathologically or injured, the cat will stretch and retract because of pain in its claws.

Solutions to the stretching and retracting of cat’s claws:

1. If it is caused by curiosity, you can give the cat the object that the cat is curious about, or give the cat a toy. Divert attention.

2. If there is a fight between cats, you can separate the two cats to prevent injury.

3. If it is caused by paw lesions, the cat’s paws need to be debrided and the lesions should be disinfected, anti-inflamed and relieved of the cat’s pain.
