Zinc phosphide is in the form of black powder and is highly toxic. It tastes similar to garlic and is relatively cheap. Because this product is very effective, toxicity can occur within minutes after animals accidentally ingest it. It is more harmful to animals and often causes secondary poisoning in cats.

　1. Symptoms

Symptoms usually appear within 1-3 hours after dogs and cats accidentally eat poisonous bait or poisoned rats, including foaming at the mouth, vomiting, and the vomit has a garlic smell. In severe cases, they cannot stand up, have convulsions all over the body, accelerated breathing, and loss of appetite. Finally passed out and died.

　2. Treatment

There is no specific antidote for zinc phosphide poisoning. Because it is not an organophosphorus, atropine and pralidoxime cannot be used to detoxify. Clinically, symptomatic treatment is still the main method. It is found that in the early stage of poisoning, 1% Cuso4 solution can be administered to induce vomiting. Chlorpromazine 1-2ml can be injected intramuscularly to relieve spasms. For small dogs and cats, it can be combined with intraperitoneal injection of sugar and saline. For larger dogs and cats, it can be combined with intravenous infusion and other therapies to promote the elimination of toxins as soon as possible.
