Commonly docked dog breeds

1. Dogs that hunt poultry, such as Cocker Spaniels, Weimaraners, and Springer Spaniels. Because they often need to cross thorns or bushes to drive away prey such as rabbits or quail, the wagging tail can cause obstruction and even injury, so humans have their tails amputated.
2. Guard dogs, such as Great Danes and Doberman Pinschers. Because they are mainly used for guarding and biting, their tails are docked so that their tails will not be attacked during combat. There is also a saying that after a dog's tail is cut off, it can no longer use its tail to show "submission" body language, which is conducive to cultivating their brave and ferocious character.
3. Ornamental dogs, such as Teddy dogs and Corgis. This type of dogs have their tails docked mainly to meet human aesthetic requirements or to participate in professional dog competitions.

Methods for dog tail docking

There are three methods for dog tail docking: surgical amputation, hemostatic forceps tail amputation, and rubber band amputation.
The simpler method is the rubber band cutting method. Prepare a relatively elastic rubber band, wipe and disinfect the base of the dog's tail with alcohol or iodine, and then tie it up with the rubber band to prevent blood flow and cause muscle necrosis. Finally, disinfection should be done after tail docking to avoid infection.
It is recommended that inexperienced owners go to a pet hospital to have their dog’s tail surgically docked by a professional doctor, and do not rashly try to dock their dog’s tail on their own.
