What is hookworm disease

Hookworm disease is a parasitic disease caused by hookworms parasitizing the small intestine of dogs, with the main symptoms of anemia, digestive disorders and malnutrition. Some cases can also cause skin diseases in dogs.

Symptoms of hookworm disease

Dogs will appear emaciated, weak, anemic, and have pale conjunctiva. Dogs will pass mucus and bloody stools with a rancid smell, and their stools will be tarry. Dermatitis will occur if infected through the skin. The owner can use the saturated salt water flotation method to check the feces, and the diagnosis can be confirmed if hookworm eggs are found.

Causes of hookworm disease

There are many original species of hookworm disease. The hookworms that infect dogs include Ancylostoma canis, Ancylostoma brasiliensis, Ancylostoma ceylonensis and Ancylostoma ancylostomy. However, The most common ones are Ancylostoma caninum and Ancylostoma canis. Canine hookworms are light yellow and linear, with the head end slightly bent dorsally and a well-developed mouth pouch. There are three pairs of sharp hook-shaped teeth on both sides of the abdomen at the front edge of the mouth pouch.

How to treat hookworm disease

Dogs with mild symptoms can be dewormed directly with drugs, while dogs with severe anemia and dehydration need infusion, albumin, plasma, etc. If a dog has skin problems, deworming and skin symptomatic treatment will prevail.
