Scabies

Also known as canine scabies, it is a highly contagious skin disease in which dog scabies mites can infect cats, pigs, horses, sheep and various other species (including humans ) but are easily treated and rarely fatal. Symptoms of scabies are caused by an allergic reaction to scabies mites burrowing into the skin and laying eggs. The infection causes a severely itchy rash, oozing yellow crusts, loss of fur, pustules and other health problems. Many dogs develop skin infections from constantly licking or scratching themselves.

All dogs raised by mothers have canis mites, which are transferred from mother to pups through cuddling in the first days of life. Most dogs live in harmony with their mites and never suffer any consequences. Scabies can also be a sign of a compromised immune system, a genetic problem, an endocrine problem, or other underlying health issues. Treatment depends on the dog's age at onset.

How to look for scabies mites:

In its advanced stages, scabies is a systemic disease. Dogs will experience poor physical condition, weight loss, fever, swollen lymph nodes, fatigue and lethargy. The dog is not interested in anything - including eating, drinking or defending itself. Even coyotes or wild dogs with mange can become approachable due to lack of energy, physical weakness, and poor eyesight and hearing. Untreated infection eventually leads to an extremely slow and uncomfortable death. Without medication, the dog may die from exhaustion, starvation, dehydration, or bacterial infection.

How to treat

Young dogs often fully recover from scabies, but adult dogs often require long-term treatment to control the disease. Treatments should all be performed with skin abrasions every two weeks. After two consecutive scrapes are negative, stop taking the medication, but a final scrape should be performed one month after treatment to ensure there is no recurrence. Occasionally, a veterinarian may submit a skin biopsy or tissue sample for analysis.

Although mites are rarely found on a biopsy, microscopic changes in the skin associated with scabies can be noted and can aid in diagnosis.
