The bed should support the dog

One of the most important things to consider when buying a bed for your dog is whether the bed can support your dog. Although a soft bed may seem comfortable, an older dog, especially one with joint problems, should not sink into it to the floor. A firmer dog bed will provide more support for your dog's joints, making it easier to get in and out of. In a bed that is too soft, the filling inside can be moved, and the filling is either pushed around the dog or piled to the side.

It should accommodate all of your dog's positions, not just his favorite position. Orthopedic beds are designed to support the joints in your dog’s body, especially its back. Many are made with memory foam, which is soft enough to relax but strong enough to prevent your dog from sticking to the floor. Memory foam also doesn’t permanently fix your dog’s shape, so it won’t change shape due to your dog’s use. A simple test to see if the pad is a good fit: Stick your hand into the dog bed pad and if you can feel the floor or if the padding moves around your hand, don't buy it.

The bed should be easy for the dog to climb in and out of

Older dogs are less likely to jump out of bed in the morning. After a night's sleep, your dog's joints may become stiff when he wakes up in the morning, making it painful to jump out of bed. Because it's not as agile as it once was, this could cause it to get injured, especially on slippery floors. It’s actually very simple, don’t raise the dog’s bed, and the dog’s bed must not have railings. This will save him from having to stand up, jump off or get out of bed.

Don’t choose materials that are too warm

Temperature is another common sleep disorder, usually because the dog is too hot and cannot sleep. Some materials are very warm, which makes them uncomfortable and difficult to sleep on. Beds made from "thermally neutral" materials will provide dogs with a better sleep. Although a bed made of wool looks very comfortable and soft, its thermal properties are too good. Materials like cotton are more breathable than thicker, denser materials, so they don't tightly trap your dog's body heat. A cool, washable, waterproof bedding cover would also be great for a dog that may have bladder issues. If you're worried that the memory foam might be too warm for your dog, just add a breathable cover.

Place the bed in a quiet place

Prepare several cushions for your dog in different locations in your home. But dogs need a quiet place to rest, and a place near the door or the kitchen is not suitable. If you have a small single-family house, somewhere on the lowest floor of the house is best, as it won't require you to climb the stairs first thing every morning.

As the dog gets older, it may need to urinate more frequently, so the bed should not be too far away from the toilet, otherwise the dog may lose control halfway through.

 

Create a sense of security for dogs

Even dogs in the wild will not sleep directly outdoors. This is the nature of our dogs. Dogs like to sleep in an enclosed space like a cave where they feel safest. This doesn't mean you need to use a flight box, even a quiet corner will do.

If you choose to use a crate, the door should always be open and it should be a happy, safe place that your dog will want to go.
