Symptoms of hypoglycemia in dogs

1. The sick dog is physically weak and has paroxysmal neurological symptoms, muscle spasms, motor ataxia, and often causes blindness.
2. The puppies are depressed at the beginning of the disease, with unsteady gait, facial muscle twitching, and paroxysmal spasms throughout the body. They soon fall into a coma, and their blood sugar can drop to 30 mg per 100 ml.
3. The female dog has muscle spasms, whole body tonic or intermittent spasms, body temperature rises to 41 to 42 degrees, breathing and heartbeat accelerate, and urine ketone body test is positive.
4. The blood sugar level is reduced (less than 50 mg%) and the insulin concentration in the plasma is increased. However, in cases of hypoglycemia caused by causes other than islet cell tumor, the insulin concentration is normal or low. In addition, the glucose tolerance test has high diagnostic significance for this disease.

Causes of hypoglycemia in dogs

1. Excessive insulin secretion (such as islet cell tumor), liver glucose storage and conversion disorders (such as fatty liver, cirrhosis), adrenal gland Factors such as cortical hypofunction, pituitary insufficiency, and central nervous system disorders can cause hypoglycemia.
Puppies before 2 or 3 months old often suffer from hypoglycemia, which is caused by cold, hunger or gastrointestinal disorders.
3. Hypoglycemia in female dogs is mostly caused by too many litters, increased nutritional needs and large amounts of lactation after delivery.

Prevention and treatment measures for hypoglycemia in dogs

1. Strengthen nutrition for sick dogs and provide them with high-protein and high-carbohydrate feeds.
2. In order to increase the blood sugar concentration of sick dogs, diazoxide (10~40 mg/kg) or glucocorticoids can be used.
3. If hypoglycemia is caused by insulin cell tumor, the pancreatic islets can be removed.
