Symptoms of mastitis in dogs

1. Acute mastitis: systemic symptoms such as fever, depression, loss of appetite, and preference to lie down may occur. The affected area is congested, swollen, hardened, warm and painful, the lymph nodes on the breast are swollen, milk is not discharged smoothly, or lactation is reduced or stopped. In diseased colostrum, the milk is thin. In purulent mastitis, the milk becomes pus-like and contains yellow floc or blood.
2. Chronic mastitis: systemic symptoms are not obvious, one or more breast areas become hard, and watery secretions can be squeezed out by strong pressure.
3. Vesicular mastitis: It is more common in older dogs. The breasts become hard and hyperplastic vesicles can be palpated. Laboratory tests showed that the total number of white blood cells was elevated.

The cause of mastitis in dogs

It is often caused by trauma to the female dog’s nipples (bitten by puppies or injuries caused by mechanical factors such as friction and squeezing). Certain pathogenic bacteria invade the breasts through trauma and cause infection.

How to deal with dog mastitis

1. Once a female dog is found to have symptoms of mastitis, the puppies should be isolated immediately, the udders should be cleaned and the milk should be expressed, every 2 to 3 days during the day Squeeze once every hour and every 6 hours at night to reduce breast pressure and relieve pain.
2. Antibiotic injection into the nipple has good effect. After the female dog expresses her milk, penicillin and streptomycin should be injected into the mammary gland through the milk duct, 1 to 2 times a day. After injecting, pinch the nipple with two fingers and gently rub the breast to spread the medicine as much as possible. Any remaining milk should be expressed before each injection.
3. In the acute stage of inflammation, local cold compress can be applied. In the chronic stage, local hot compress can be used.
