What is dog osteosarcoma

It is a malignant tumor derived from osteoblasts. It is a proliferation of spindle cell matrix that directly forms osteoid or immature bone. Most osteosarcomas occur on the long bones of the limbs, mostly in the radius, humerus, tibia, femur, etc. It is a treatable but usually not curable disease.

How Long Can Dogs Live with Osteosarcoma

50% of dogs with osteosarcoma treated using the current standard of care (approximately 50% of cases) achieve survival in approximately 1 year (or approximately 10% of life span), some dogs live 5-6 years after diagnosis. The standard of care is surgery (limb-sparing amputation) and adjuvant chemotherapy. Currently, the drug of choice for most cases is carboplatin. Chemotherapy is only recommended after the primary tumor has been removed. It is ineffective without surgery.
